MediaSnack-snack-snackers#12
[SUMMARY—Quotes which illustrate.]
(WORLD) MediaSnackers are being served more and more ways to snack on their chosen media than ever. It's hard to differentiate between companies and start-ups enabling snacking or the snacking trends driving media platform development, but here are a couple of quotes from the 'experts' to sum it all up for any 'MediaSnacker-virgins':
My attitude is that the technology is here… our responsibility is to inform and teach people about responsible use of that technology.
Secondary principals association president Peter Gall, of Auckland's Papatoetoe High School and his reaction to the growing trend of banning access to social networking sites in New Zealand.
It's allowed them to connect with learning in a meaningful way, in a way textbooks can't.
Canadian teacher, Kathy Cassidy talking about her blogging 101 class to grade 1 students (6 year olds).
Young people are 'grazers,' according to a recent Readership Institute study, who don't go looking for news, but will stop to read 'if it catches my eye,' or if they 'bump into something.'
From this article discussing how young people access and think about news at the 7th World Young Readers Conference.

(USA) Exergaming is seen as a possible way to tackle the obesity issue whilst utilising the growing youth culture of gaming.
Nexgym is an example of a new business doing just that—offering a mashup of interactivity and exercise with activities such as 'Cybex Trazer', 'Nexfit Bike' and 'Dance Dance Revolution', all for 6-14 year olds.

Shakespeare Gets The MySpace Treatment
[SUMMARY—Repositioning Romeo and Juliet for the digital natives.]
(USA) I love it when old school gets mashed with new school—check this, Romeo and Juliet have got their own MySpace profiles.
A teacher in Portland (we were just there folks) basically assigned her students studying the text to create profiles for the characters as a way to bring the story up to date.
Students in groups of three or four created a Web site for a character, with pictures at the top, lists of hobbies, blog entries and a space where other characters could comment. Claire Danes, Leonardo DiCaprio and other actors from the 1996 film version were popular choices for photographs. Romeo's chaste lover Rosaline listed "Never Been Kissed" as one of her favorite movies. Juliet liked "The OC."
Tell me again why most institutions are blocking access to these types of sites…?
Hat-tip to Lora Lillard from Portland.

Pupils will be given their assignments in groups of 120 in the morning before dispersing to wi-fi zones to study.
Merseyside's Knowsley Council is replacing 1950s-style secondary schools with centres where children follow programmes matching their interests.
In this next phase of the web we are going to use technology to make creativity easier and I think we are going to see everybody wanting to be creative. This means that people better rethink the nature of media.
Philip Rosedale, founder of Second Life talking about future web developments.
The Pew study reports that 73 percent of U.S. adults surveyed own a mobile phone, 68 percent have a desktop computer, 30 percent own a laptop, and 73 percent use the Internet, yet only 8 percent are "deep users" of Web 2.0 features

Reshape School: Space and Place
[SUMMARY—How it went.]
(USA) Portland, Oregon is a bold and great city. It's strapline is 'a city that works' (the states': a state that dreams).
'Reshape Youth: Space and Place' was/is an audacious event. With a focus on exploring and influencing the cities school design and education system, simply being involved is an honour and privilege.
DK and MediaSnakers brought to Portland a thoughtful, relevant and meaningful perspective of students, their interests, how they relate and engage with each other and the world they are a growing part of. His presentation at Portland Public Schools Reshape Schools: Space & Place Summit opened adults eyes and ears and challenged us to think anew.

In The Wild Part One
[SUMMARY—At Channel 4 again.]
(GBR) Yesterday, MediaSnackers participated at a great event, hosted by Channel 4 called 'In The Wild'—check out the event blog here.
Not only did we get the opportunity to be interviewed by some inspiring young people attending the event and the fantastically lovely BBC Click reporter Katie Ledger, but we also got to meet an array of individuals whose enthusiasm for new media and technology matched our own.
We were also hugely honoured to share the stage with (new to Channel 4 and chair of the session) Matt Locke, Commissioning Editor, Channel 4 Education, Bronwyn Kunhardt, Director of Social Media Consensus and Rachel O'Connell, Chief Safety Officer, Bebo. Plus, we got the opportunity to deliver a presentation with blogger and social media specialist Ewan McIntosh (a pure thrill and privilege).
If you want a deeper insight into what happened in our session then check out Dans write-up or have a peek at Ewans blog entry.

1,000 UK Youth Hubs
[SUMMARY—Give them space, revisited.]
(GBR) In the past 15 years the UK government has sold nearly 34,000 sports pitches in England. Even allowing for new ones being built, the overall number of pitches has seen a 45% decline.
Shopping centres are cracking down on the mere presence of young people. By banning teens from their premises through stereotyping and criminalising anyone wearing hoodies.
The government has also introduced laws to tackle anti-social behaviour, some of which make it illegal for young people to simply congregate in groups. This is part of their ironically named RESPECT agenda.
A few years ago I wrote an ebook entitled 'Give Them Space'. In my research, I tried to get a figure on how many youth centres there are in the UK. I contacted many national youth organisations and no-one could give me an answer or even hazard a guess (I can't be alone in thinking that's just wrong?). From my own professional and personal experiences, I know more youth centres are being closed than opened.
Young people today simply don't have any space and is porbably one of the reasons why they are populating virtual worlds and online platforms.
Now, Children's charity 4Children and The National Youth Agency are lobbying the government calling on them to create 1,000 youth hubs across the UK which 'would allow one-to-one and small group work, and provide a range of services including IT facilities and study support'.

[SUMMARY—Short film review of our two day youth professional training for Mencap.]
MediaSnackers provided two days multi media training for Mencap staff. The two days were fun, informative and hugely stimulating. We all went away buzzing with ideas, with increased confidence and an urge to explore areas of multi media practice that were previously new to us.

Tape Is Dead—Long Live Tape
[SUMMARY—Analogue gives way to digital.]
(GBR) The news that electrical retailer Currys will be ceasing its sales of the analogue audio tapes is another indication of the impact and dominance of digital.
Back in 1989 83 million tapes we sold and last year is was down to a mere 100,000. Only 5% of new audio systems have a tape deck although there are estimates of 500 million tapes still in circulation (how many will be home-made mixtapes).
Tape is dead—long live tape.

Bill And Sams BTEC Adventure
[SUMMARY—Launch of a youth magazine.]
(GBR) There is a growing discourse around new media use in education—the video below appears on a this wiki set up by sports teacher Kristian Still of Taunton College, Southampton (who kindly gives us permission to share):
The wiki was put together to encourage collaboration between students, and between students and staff. The video idea can from our good friend DK, as a way for the students to showcase their course for prospective students.
It's another great example of how online platforms and new media technologies can push the boundaries of learning and collaboration. Well done Bill and Sam and the rest fo the Taunton College students.
