UK Bound : SA Wrap-up
[SUMMARY—What an adventure.]
(RSA) MediaSnackers has had an amazing experience here in Johannesburg, South Africa at the 5th World Summit on Media for Children (check out the 'digital journalists' blog).
The opportunity to come to Africa and work with such a diverse range of young people plus meet and talk 'youth media' with so many interesting individuals/organisations was simply humbling. We also got the chance to meet associates and colleagues who have been great friends/supporters of MediaSnackers but whom we have never met face to face.
Here are just some of the amazing people MediaSnackers had the privilege to meet: Clifford Cohen of AnimAction (USA); Mimi, Amitatou and Cathy all from Plan International (SEN and PHI); Martin and Thomas from Radijojo (GER); Liz Nealon of Tesseractive Pictures (USA); Janet English from KOCE (USA); Susanne Wad of Station Next (DEN); Tamara Dawit Plan Canada (CAN); JoEllen Fisherkeller from Dept. of Culture and Communication at NYU (USA); Chris, Emidio and Karen all from Unicef (GER, MOZ and USA); Bruktawit and Shane of Whiz Kids Workshop (ETH); Linda Raftree from Plan USA (USA); Miomir Rajcevic of Media Education Centre (SER); Ian Stewart, Author of Ambushed (USA); Elke Scholte of International Central Institute from Youth and Educational Television (GER); Kevin Fine of Little Champs and 5FM (RSA); and many more…
Thanks to the young people who so enthusiatically participated and attended our workshops. Thanks to the summit organisers for giving us the opporunity to be involved. Thanks to all the other young people and professionals we met for their friendship and humility, and thanks to the people of Johannesburg for simply being so superbly nice. Last but not least thanks to BT Education for sponsoring the training and trip.
The next Summit will be in Karlstad, Sweden 2010
MediaSnackers provided real world support for the event by training young people to both use the video equipment supplied by BT and to interview the participants of the event. The challenges of the interviewing task should not be underestimated as the questioning, feedback, challenging and summarising skills are difficult to master.
The resultant vodcasts were a credit to MediaSnackers who produced both meaningful and entertaining reporting from the Summit despite a number of technical challenges which are captured on film. A highly professional and successful partnership—thanks.
David Hancock, Head of Education and Volunteering, BT

DirectgovKids
[SUMMARY—Educating kids about government.]
(UK) DirectgovKids attempts the impossible—to educate five to elevent year olds through a website about Government and public services in a fun way.
Apart from the HUGE design no-no of resizing your browser, the site is very interactive and you can get a flavour of how it could be used to compliment the current curriculum. Gail O'Flaherty, Head Teacher at St Edmund's, said:
The site explains in a fun and informative way many of today's key issues, including healthy living and eating, food production and recycling. Our School Council have found the site useful as they have petitioned our local council for a lollipop lady and the process is explained on the website.

Children Online
[SUMMARY—MediaSnackers speaking at an event next month.]
(UK) MediaSnackers have been invited as one of the speakers at the Children Online event hosted by NMK
Here's the blurb:
Our children are growing up in a media revolution, a world where everyone can be their own publisher, where the boundaries of social mores and authority is eroding. What does myspace and youtube mean to tots and tweens? How do we 'grown-ups' communicate and engage with children and youth culture in this environment?

The Importance Of Old School Media
[SUMMARY—How radio is still one of the widest digested mediums.]
(WORLD) The March issue of UNICEFs Media Magic Digest reminds us all that radio is still the widest and dominant media formed consumed across the globe. It still holds importance and credibility, as illustrated in the projects the newsletter outlines.
Here at MediaSnackers we talk a lot about new media, online platforms/tools and technology—thanks to UNICEF and the gentle reminder that old school still has huge relevance and impact for many young people across the globe.

Pod Blog Vod Part 2
[SUMMARY—2nd training gig for the BBC.]
(UK) Yesterday MediaSnackers was delivering three 90minute training sessions to another group of BBC journalists/production staff. Our bit focussed on young people and the changing media landscape plus 'RSS 101 for noobies'—this was part of the second internal BBC 'Pod, Blog, Vod' day.
The session was aimed at those who had little or no knowledge of RSS feeds and how they could be used. DK pitched his session just right and engaged so well with each of the groups. They all benefitted from his relaxed but highly informed style.
Jane Kinghorn, Creative Producer
Thanks to all the participants for making the day great and for challenging me with their questions.

The MediaSnackers Meme #3
[SUMMARY—Keeping track of the growing MediaSnackers Meme.]
(WORLD) We weren't the first to apply the 'snacking' metaphor to media. Although there seems to be a growing adoption in terms of describing the new youth-media landscape—we thought it would be good to keep an eye on the growing MediaSnacking meme:
Start selling 'snack sized' pieces of content on sites like iTunes—think 20cents, not $11.99
Branding and trends blog Influx on how to market the second Borat movie.
Are we now grazing media as if we were gathering digital blackberries in an electronic forest?
Antonio Lopez, Media Educator from his blog post exploring the MediaSnackers Meme.
Thinking about this, I begin to wonder if this is truly "snacking". While I'm constantly searching for small bits of information, I'm also getting something much more substantial: highly personalized content all delivered to my inbox. It's not just bits, because there's a wealth of substantial material.
Brad Levinson commenting on the recent Wired feature on his blog.

MediaSnack-snack-snackers#10
[SUMMARY—Quotes which illustrate.]
(WORLD) MediaSnackers are being served more and more ways to snack on their chosen media than ever. It's hard to differentiate between companies and start-ups enabling snacking or the snacking trends driving media platform development, but here are a couple of quotes from the 'experts' to sum it all up for any 'MediaSnacker-virgins':
All students have the right to learn in a safe and supportive learning environment—this includes making students' experience of the virtual world of learning as safe and productive as possible.
Australian Education Services Minister Jacinta Allan on the states decision to ban access to YouTube in schools in an attempt to stop curb cyberbullying.
We have to recognize they kids different from us. We watch TV, they make TV. It is technology that has made them different.
Creative Commons founder Larry Lessig talking at this years TED conference.
…I'd rather my kid spent 200 mins a night of interaction in front of the computer instead of 200 minutes passiveness in front of the telly. To be honest, what I think or what the elderly gent who saw me at the end thinks, doesn't matter. The kids are doing this, will be doing this and it's down to parents and teachers to consider their roles in understanding and directing this 'play' rather than criticising it.
From the blog and the fantastic Ewan MacIntosh.

Gen Y Attention Span
[SUMMARY—Is texting to blame?]
(WORLD) '1 message received' is the most likely thing I'll see in the morning when I switch my phone on (oh, aren't I popular?). Text messaging has been one of the most successful methods of communication for younger people in the past decade or so (give or take a few years). With mobile phone tariffs offering '1,000 free texts' with new contracts, it's no wonder that SMS is a huge part of generation Y.

The MediaSnackers Meme #2
[SUMMARY—Keeping track of the growing MediaSnackers Meme.]
(WORLD) We weren't the first to apply the 'snacking' metaphor to media. Although there seems to be a growing adoption in terms of describing the new youth-media landscape—we thought it would be good to keep an eye on the growing MediaSnacking meme:
Check this article discussing how MediaSnacking has been built and gained momentum through user-generated video websites.
Those clever girls and boys from Wired write their Snack Minifesto:
In the morning, we check news and tap out emails on laptops. At work we graze all day on videos and blogs. Back home, the giant HDTV is for 10-course feasting—say, an entire season of 24. In between are the morsels that fill those whenever minutes, as your mobile phone carrier calls them: a 30-second game on your Nintendo DS, a 60-second webisode on your cell, a three-minute podcast on your MP3 player.
Disney Channel Worldwide president Gary Marsh sums it up superbly:
What we're really trying to do is be all the places that kids are. Kids are media snackers. They will consume media in many, many different places. We want to make sure that when they are hungry, we are available.
Got any more? Let us know.
