Odeo Sucks

odeo

[SUMMARY—Looking for new podcast hosting.]

(WORLD) MediaSnackers has been using Odeo since we first started podcasting back in June 2005. We're now getting close to our 100 mark and Odeo has died. Uploading content, getting on their websites and no response from help tickets have left us feeling totally frustrated.

We're nice people here at MediaSnackers but stuff like this realy makes us stamp our feet. We have sent a whole bunch of emails (and continue to do so every couple of hours) and left a few comments on their blog. No response. Nothing. Not a zip. And it's been two weeks people.

Looking round the web other people are having the same issues.

MediaSnackers spends a lot of time talking, delivering training and doing consultancy around new media and technology to a lot of different organisations and brands (see client list)—we used to suggest Odeo but no more.

Fellow Odeo users I encourage you to leave a message on the latest Odeo blog post or contact them direct like I have been doing every couple of hours.

So as we look for an alternative we hope someone from Odeo is paying attention. We'd love to stick with you but first you have to sort out your customer relations and more important your service—maybe divert some time away from Twitter and make sure your first-born is working

UPDATE: Yesterday, MediaSnackers received an email from Odeo's President ensuring us the issue would be sorted out (which it has already—see latest podcast)—here's hoping it was a blip in their operations.

snacked

[SUMMARY—Quotes which illustrate.]

(WORLD) MediaSnackers are being served more and more ways to snack on their chosen media than ever. It's hard to differentiate between companies and start-ups enabling snacking or the snacking trends driving media platform development, but here are a couple of quotes from the 'experts' to sum it all up for any 'MediaSnacker-virgins':

Talking to them about the role of technology in their lifestyle would be like talking to kids in the 1980s about the role the park swing or the telephone played in their social lives—it's invisible.
Andrew Davidson, vice president of MTV's VBS International Insight unit talking about thier new study.

Under new rules that took effect Monday, Chinese Internet gaming companies must install a program that requires users to enter their ID card numbers. After three hours, players under 18 are prompted to stop and "do suitable physical exercise.
Chinese governments response to their youth generation playing too many online games.

This Barbie, smaller and less shapely than her standard cousin, functions like an MP3 music player. When her feet are plugged into her docking station, she unlocks pages of games, virtual shops and online chat functions on the BarbieGirls.com Web site.
Barbie goes tech.

There are so many articles on the web taking different stances on the results—here are just a few: Net Imperative, Reuters, MultiChannel News, C21 Media, Times of India, Financial Times, Red Herring, PC World and BCS.

(WORLD) As MediaSnackers continues to grow we are busy formulating our business plan/model and service offerings but we need some help…

We are striving to become carbon neutral!

We've done some research and come across a few companies like Carbon Neutral, Carbon Clear and CO2 Balance. Is it a case of reducing our impact whilst totting up the air/travel miles and investing in offset schemes? Or are there other ways to go about this?

If you can help, offer first-hand advice/experience or point us in the right direction please get in touch here.

[SUMMARY—Old school still rules-sort of.]

(WORLD) Yesterday, young people across the world finally got their hands on the final book of the Harry Potter series. This hyperlinked-screened generation is still going mad over this old school offering—why? Simply, it's a great story which has many avenues for involvement, interaction and sharing.

However, days before its release, the entire booked was leaked onto the net. This is enabled stunts like this and this plus got fans adopted net/email avoidance tactics like this.

It's becoming harder and harder to keep a secret—although they are doing it with this

I Used A OLPC Laptop

100dollarlaptop

[SUMMARY—The truth about a OLPC laptop?]

(WORLD) Well I thought it would be the simplist thing in the world to operate, I thought it would be modeled on everything I ever learned about computers, for all the years I've been using them. I thought I'd adjust to it so easily. I thought wrong. When I got my hands on one, it was like handing a laptop to an alien. It was like nothing I'd ever touched before. And I couldn't open it. Y'see the guy who had been looking at it before me, closed it. And it clicked shut, with a nice solid well engineered 'click'… the sort of thing that you could hear across a quiet room and found on such quality items from Sony etc. I heard it click shut. All I had to do was open it up and master the controls like the equipment guru I am.

Education will move away from just the teaching of facts to a model where students start to be more creative and develop their own ideas and concepts. We will see students using social media to share these ideas of their own with others. Along with having a conversation about old ideas and their new ones.
17 year ild Ethan Bodnar giving his views on social media.

In a recent study published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, researchers found no evidence that sharing personal information increases the chances of online victimization, like unwanted sexual solicitation and harassment.
Some new evidence to combat those moral panics.

The younger generation today is wired differently than people in my generation, What that tells me is we as librarians have to look at how we present materials that we have for them the way they want it.
How libraries are changing their systems for the younger generation.

Showcomotion Film Review

[SUMMARY—Short film from our time up north.]

Featured music: Trenches by Nick Garcia.

I'd like to thank you for joining us as a key partner at the 2007 Showcomotion Children's Media Conference. As you know, the conference was a great success this year, and an important part of that success was the contribution of the MediaSnackers Digital Journalists. You recruited and trained a team of young digital journalists who blogged and created vodcasts of the conference. It was impressive to see them pick up skills so quickly and be able to engage with the delegates immediately. They will have learnt invaluable technical skills as well as being trained in team work, thinking on their feet, and working with top level professionals media delegates and speakers.

For the conference, it was great to have an up to date 'live' presence on the web and to be able to direct delegates to the MediaSnackers site, the blog and I have to say the fantastic photos. It's a lively addition to the conference website. The journalists also created a youthful and buzzy atmosphere at the conference itself, which I know the delegates and the committee appreciated.

Showco Flashbacks: Amber

digijournoamber

[SUMMARY—Reflecting on the conference.]

(GBR) I think all the digital journalists would agree that ShowComotion provided an invaluable opportunity to speak to and learn from people working within the children's television industry. Additionally the conference also made me think about the role young people can play in the development of the media sector. Younger generations consume media at a rate and extent many adults would not even think was possible. From animation, social networking, game consoles, mobile phones, YouTube and MySpace etc. we've found ways to create our own identities and most importantly to be imaginative. So, there is actually a lot adults within the television industry can learn from children and young people about the changing world of the media…

I was pleased to witness a professional adult at the conference who recognised the importance of responding to children and young people. Co-creator of Yo Gabba Gabba! (which will be screened by Nick Jnr in August), Christian Jacobs, in his session 'Creative Workshop' explained how his own children helped him explore and experiment with new ideas. He also discussed how young interns he'd taken on to help with the show had amazed and educated him and his team with their talent and knowledge concerning animation and computer graphics. Through responding and learning from his interns and children, Yo Gabba Gabba! was able to improve in content and quality.

Christian was not interested in creating a programme within a traditional blueprint of what 'works' in the children's television industry. Instead, he used his own interests as well as those of children and young people to create a completely original show. His creative vision came from a type of re-moulding and recycling of basic ideas which were taken predominantly from hip hop, dance, computer graphics, animation, crazy costumes and electro beats and it was ultimately this merging of influences from all areas of the media world which was so refreshing and exciting to watch (check out the trailer).

Christian also had the insight to realise the power of media tools such as YouTube and MySpace to promote his work. Posting up the trailer resulted in Nick Jnr being bombarded with emails requesting the future screening of the show. Watching Yo Gabba Gabba! taught me that if you want to create a media product be it a children's television show, a short film or a simple vodcast, inputting your own influences in order to encourage a new style can lead to original and exciting creations. Working with the Digital Journalists and receiving training from DK and Mark was a first step in this learning curve as we were given the opportunity to edit, film, blog and work with the internet to show the world what was happening at ShowComotion from a wide range of people's perspectives including our own.

Thanks to all the delegates who made the experience worthwhile and to DK, Mark, Ryan, Emily, Jess, Laura, Hanna and Cherish who made sure it was definitely always high in 'FUN!' content.

Media vs Young People

shouting

[SUMMARY—Does the media not like young people?]

(GBR/WORLD) UK publication Young People Now commissioned some research about the how the media portrays young people and surprise surprise—87.5% of broadcast items were negative (find all the stats here).

The research focussed on newspapers and news broadcasters for a week in May and highlights the usual negative rhetoric used by these media channels. There is an obvious need to challenge and change the attitudes of these media players (which is why the Positive Images campaign runs) but are we going far enough?

Luckily young people don't consume mainstream media anymore and are active creators, producers and participants. With the decline in mainstream media and the impact of citizen journlism and fragmentation of media platforms MediaSnackers believes the focus should be on empowering young people to have their own voice (which is why we do what we do)!

UPDATE: Dawn Butler MP. The Member of Parliament for Brent South and newly appointed Vice-Chair of the Labour Party has tabled an Early Day Motion today (11 July 2007) in the House of Commons:

…acknowledges that only a small minority of young people are antisocial; believes that the media does not give young people enough recognition for the positive things they do; and urges Hon. Members to ensure young people's views are represented in public debate by creating opportunities for their input such as holding youth surgeries and visiting schools, colleges and universities.

Jess, Facebook And ShowCo

[SUMMARY—Digital breadcrumbs as far as the eye can see.]

(GBR) Following an extremely busy week, (leavers prom, going to Devon with all of my friends, going to the Showcomotion conference in Sheffield with Mediasnackers) I feel the social need to delve myself right back into being a Mediasnacker myself, and open my emails, reply to MySpace messages and even more recently…checking Facebook.

I said I would register for an account as soon as I'd finished sitting my A-Levels and here I am, hooked on it already. As late as I am on this craze, I do feel a bit like I'm being watched constantly, and as my friend, Luci said, it's a bit like "stalker heaven". Literally every move that you make is shown on your page, who you've commented, who's commented you, which photos you've commented on, who you're now friends with—it's all a bit scary. When we were sitting in the bar in the showroom earlier this week, DK very aptly stated that social networking sites such as Facebook left little "digital breadcrumbs"—and I have to say, he's 100% correct (thought you'd never see the day you'd hear me say that!). Everyone is keeping tabs on you, and I am slightly weirded out by it all. Then again, I have nothing to hide, so I find Facebook wicked.

It's all a bit exciting though because as the rest of the digital journalists got ready to depart from Showcomotion, it wasn't a case of 'write down your number so we can keep in touch', it was more, 'Facebook me'. Facebook is being used as a verb as well as a noun! How brilliant. So I've just found almost everyone who was a 'digi journo' from ShowCo on Facebook, and have already spoken to Emily a few times—an amazing way to keep in touch with new people and find old friends.

Showcomotion in itself was brilliant. It was amazing and invaluable to just have hands on, practical, experience. Very tiring to say the least, but it was well worth it and I met some really great people! I learnt loads about the media industry, which I was hoping to in the beginning, so I feel… educated I guess—all whilst HAVING FUN! (one of DK's aims has been fulfilled…!)Written by Jess

e-skills Diploma in IT Launch

eskills

[SUMMARY—New course for the UK.]

(GBR) At the launch of the Diploma In IT

Steve Moore from Policy Unplugged introduced the day explaining the first half would be presentations and panel discussion then the second half will be an 'unconference' session.

Gareth Cadwalladar, Diploma Director for the new course talked about the evolution and development of said course. Lots of input from the industry and employment sector. Talked about what they wanted from school leavers and graduates. Gareth talked through the options available for the programme curriculum.

John Higging, Director General for Intellect UK representing the IT industry. Talked about what skills IT companies are looking for in the workplace and their expectations. Made the point that we have to focus on creatin gthe 'best students' as all markets are global.

Matt Locke, Commissioning Editor (New Media) Channel 4 Education, talking about something we like—the pace of change to the whole media infrasctructure and architecture. Touched on mash-ups and 'hack' events—creativity, social networking (live and virtual) and low barriers of entry has been the driver of all this change. Pooling talent for specific projects like games—individual at the center of a network with contacts . Touched on 'passion' in learning—MediaSnackers likes Matt!

MediaSnackers then delivered a short presentation on the the new media and technology landscape young people are immersed in. It was a fun event and we'll be watching closely the evolution of the course and its adoption into the curriculum.

Showco Digital Journalist Intros: Part Seven

[SUMMARY—Introducing Laura-Jane.]

(GBR) MediaSnackers will be at this years Showcomotion Children's Media Festival training up some young poeple to be digital journalists for the event. Let's meet them:

laurjanedigjourno

September 11, I was born in a scabby wing of Burnley General. I have no recollection of this, nor the next few years that followed. I remember loving Thomas the Tank Engine, hating Barbie and eating corned beef with ketchup. Oh, I also had a collection of "Jem!", a set of rock star dolls from the 1980’s that me and my sister have only ever heard of before… During this stage, I smashed my left knee cap and had more throat infections than anyone I know.

I studied Communication Studies with PR for three years. My parents thought that Uni was a time for learning about the "true value of money", hence decided not to help fund for any of it. So, with the minimum loan, high tuition fees and accommodation costs, I found several jobs to get myself by. One job paid me to go out, get drunk and have fun, so I was pretty happy!

I recently finished and moved in with a long term partner. Oh, and I moved in on Friday, and on the Monday the floods came. My brand new riverside apartment was not as desirable as I wished! Wading out was not fun, but that is another biography in itself!

By the time I begin Showcomotion I will get the results of my degree! And that is my life in a nutshell!

Showco Digital Journalist Intros: Part Six

showcomotion

[SUMMARY—Introducing Hanna.]

(GBR) MediaSnackers will be at this years Showcomotion Children's Media Festival training up some young poeple to be digital journalists for the event. Let's meet them:

hannadigjourno

Hello, my name is Hanna and I am currently in the second year of a Communications Studies Degree at Sheffield Hallam University. I was born in Northampton and have two sisters, Amy who is 22 years old and Eleanor who is 16 years old. My parents are both teachers and stayed in Northampton after they left College. In 1993 we moved to Nottingham to live in the village of Woodborough, four miles outside of the city centre. I attended the village Primary School until 1998 and then moved to Colonel Frank Seely School where I stayed until 2005. I really enjoyed my time at secondary school and had the opportunity to take part in a range of activities including gaining a silver Duke of Edinburgh Award. In my final year I was chosen by my fellow students to be the Deputy Head Girl, a real honour and privilege. I left the school with 11 GCSEs graded A*-C, three A levels in English, Media and Biology and an AS level in German.

I have a real passion for dancing. Since the age of three I have been studying ballet and from the age of twelve, Spanish and modern dancing. During this time I have taken part in a number of competitions and shows. I have performed at the Co-operative Arts Theatre, Theatre Royal and Playhouse in Nottingham and a number of venues in London. I have also achieved the full range of qualifications in ballet from primary to grade eight, receiving distinctions and highly commended certificates from the examiners. My other interests include reading, watching films, going to the gym and socialising with my friends.

I am very pleased to have the opportunity to be part of this Conference. I am keen to gain work experience in the area of journalism and public relations to find out what it is really like to work in these areas having studied the theoretical applications at University. I am also looking forward to this experience, as I believe it will help me to make a decision about my future career. I am a hard working, energetic, reliable and conscientious person capable of working on my own initiative and as part of a team. I am really looking forward to the Conference and hope to learn a great deal from it.

Hey, I'm Jess. I'm nearly 18 and I'm just finishing my A-Levels. I'm currently studying English, Business Studies and ICT, and hope to study English at university next year!

One of my biggest passions is music, I am constantly listening to it, and when I have a spare night, I'll always be at a London gig! I quite enjoy reading and creative reading, and of course, being a MediaSnacker myself, I'm forever on MySpace and YouTube! I also love shopping, partying, seeing my friends and my boyfriend and generally having time to do nothing! (Which doesn't happen often as I'm revising all the time!)

I'm really excited to be involved with Showcomotion Children's Media Conference because it'll give me a great chance to gain an insight into the media world. As I aspire to work within the journalism or media industry after I finish university, it'll be an awesome experience for me to have, plus I'm hoping it'll be loads of fun :)
