Ninety-Nine Podcasts: A Retrospective

podcastgreen

[SUMMARY—A whole lot of talking!]

(WORLD) It took fourteen months to reach the modest ninety-nine MediaSnackers podcasts milestone. Phew…

Along the way we got the opportunity to speak to amazing organisations, fantastic individuals and explored a little deeper some great youth media projects. What a resource for anyone to tap who has an interest in young people, new media and technology:

• 107 individuals interviewed
• 38 female 169 male
• participants from 11 countries (England, Italy, New Zealand, Scotland, Canada, USA, Netherlands, Germany, Australia, Finland, Belgium)
• over 16 and a half hours worth of interviews
• 18 CEO's, several young people, a couple of Doctors, 1 OBE, 1 Sir and 1 Lord.
• the most popular podcast is Dylan (in the five figures total)
• at the time of writing the podcasts have been listened to 26,604 times

A heartfelt thank you to all who gave up their time to speak to us!

We're going to take a break for a month or so from producing the MediaSnackers podcasts. It will return. Refreshed and repackaged.

Why 99? Well, we had a 100th lined up but after two false starts and a third extended raincheck we drew a line.

Don't Do It!

Kickstart_Logo

[SUMMARY—A MediaSnackers consulting freebie.]

(WORLD) Yahoo! has developed a new social job network platform called Kickstart, focussed on connecting potential employers to recent college graduates.

This is a simple mashup of social networks such as Facebook and LinkedIn—time will tell if it will succeed but we think it won't.

In the past month we have seen couple companies and several public/voluntary sector groups start thier own versions of social networks in the hope to emulate the MySpace's and Bebo's of this world. Our MediaSnackers consulting freebie (if you're not an existing web giant like Yahoo!):

Go to your audience, utilise existing platforms they populate and do not try to establish your own space!

Bank vs Facebook

facebook

[SUMMARY—Let the battle commence.]

(UK) The National Union of Students has launched a campaign against HSBC (one of the UK's leading banks) regarding their plans to scrap interest-free overdrafts for university leavers.

Instead of using leaflets and loud-hailers, this student protest is gathering support through Facebook, with the Stop The Great HSBC Graduate Rip-Off group so far acquiring almost 3,500 members—an increase of about 1,000 since the weekend.

Don't stick it, stop it!

dontstick

[SUMMARY—Boo to bullies!]

(UK) Don't stick it, stop it! is an online anti-bullying campaign from our friends at the UKs leading learning disability charity, Mencap (MediaSnackers delivered our youth professionals training course to this organisation at the beginning of the year—check out the video).

The campaign was launched off the back of some research the organisation conducted with 500 kids with a learning disability:

• 8 out of 10 had been bullied
• for 4 out of 10, telling someone about it did not help
• 8 out of 10 are scared to go out in case they are bullied
• 6 out of 10 had been physically hurt by bullies
• 3 out of 10 children had been bullied for 3 years or more

MediaSnackers doesn't like bullies and it would be great if the campaign had a higher profile plus maybe a popular online platform such as Bebo could get involved to give them a boost?

Ypulse Casts

ypulsecasts

[SUMMARY—In the youth music arena? Check this out!]

(WORLD) If you couldn't get to the Ypulse Conference last month there are a couple of videos (relating to youth music) on their Ypulsecasts site which might be of interest:

• What Music Teens Consume and How
• Music & Social Media
• Mobile Music Convergence (NEW)

MediaSnackers nearly attended to do our youth training to develop a group of digital journalists for the event (like we did in Africa and Sheffield), alas, the funds couldn't be found (next time) :-)

Great to see our suggestion of embedding a player on the page for viewers instead of downloading the hefty file to view has been adopted. Also, take the time to listen to the MediaSnackers podcast we did with Ypulse founder Anastasia Goodstein.

Newspapers And Young People

newspaper

[SUMMARY—More research.]

(WORLD) The Youth Media DNA Report focusses on the worldwide fading audience that are young newspaper readers (paid for by The World Association of Newspapers and researched by D-CODE and TakingITGlobal).

With interviews carried out with young people in Columbia, Japan, Lebanon, the Philippines, Serbia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States, the results offer a global pattern of news consumption and interaction.

My first choice for news and info is the Net. It's more of an active tool. TV is limited to what they're providing you (you sit and it's whatever the news program wants to give you in a limited time) whereas the internet, you can pick whatever you want and find the information that you're interested in instead of having the news dictate what's important for you.
(Participant USA)

Tranferrable stuff!

Thanks Marcus.

Edutopia Rules (Again)

edutopia

[SUMMARY—We're big fans!]

(WORLD) If you have any interest in media, young people, technology, education, literacy, communication et al—please take the time to check out the fantastic online resource that is Edutopia.

A great place to start is this video with founding father of Edutopia George Lucas discussing how learning and communication must be redefined and retaught (much in the same way as Sir Ken Robinson) in relation to (new) media.

Edutopia, fancy a partnership mash-up with MediaSnackers?

MediaSnack-snack-snackers#16

snacked

[SUMMARY—Quotes which illustrate.]

(WORLD) MediaSnackers are being served more and more ways to snack on their chosen media than ever. It's hard to differentiate between companies and start-ups enabling snacking or the snacking trends driving media platform development, but here are a couple of quotes from the 'experts' to sum it all up for any 'MediaSnacker-virgins':

The children of 2012 will not be inspired by watching, they will be inspired by hearing these myriad authentic stories, and by contributing some too.
Stephen Heppell talking about the development of the 2012 Olympia Media Centre.

I'm creating, I'm re-expressing, I'm criticizing, I'm spreading ideas—what's wrong with it?
Lawrence Lessig talking about the differences between what the younger generation or doing in terms of remixing their own culture compared to his generation who are trying to curtail it.

UK Young people don't see tech as a separate entity—it's an organic part of their lives. Talking to them about the role of technology in their lifestyle would be like talking to kids in the 1980's about the role the park swing or telephone played in their social lives—it's invisible. They are completely focused on the functionality and use of devices. They don't enjoy texting, or emailing for its own sake—what they enjoy is communicating with their friends all the time.
A new survey says UK teenagers spend 34 hours online each week.

Consultation Is Dead

rip

[SUMMARY—It's scary but true.]

(WORLD) Here at MediaSnackers we get a lot of emails and calls asking how to engage young people through new media and technology. Our first question is 'why?' and more often than not it's to do with a consultation event/strategy the brand/organisation/group is currently developing.

At the last couple of speaking gigs we've delivered, a little mantra has slipped into our presentation which we always share with said inquirer:

Consultation is dead!
Conversation is king!

Whether you're talking about designing a skatepark, developing a civic engagement programme, building a school, promoting a new mobile phone, launching a 10 year participation strategy, raising the profile of an entrepreneur initiative—no matter what it is, new media and technology augments the conversation you should be having with young people (another words, two-way and on-going).

The Dreams Project

dreamsproject

[SUMMARY—Daring to dream.]

(GBR) With a fantastic tagline of 'young people documenting the dream', the Dreams Project focusses on young athletes who are gearing themselves up for the London 2012 Olympics.

Filmed by young documentary film-makers (they have their own profiles online as well), the great online shorts and blogs offer an insight into the psyche and training of these committed young athletes. It also serves as a fantastic illustrative project to anyone looking to utilise new media and online platforms to tell their story—a great model to inspire.

One last thought: (due to the pervasiveness of online platforms and technology advances) this whole initiative would have not have been possible a decade ago…
