[SUMMARY—Why it's good (or not) to take a leak.]

(WORLD) Consumer trends have shown that the number of compact discs bought over the last few years have rapidly decreased. Due to the increase of illegal downloading and sending the files to all your friends, record companies are finding it difficult to trace the popularity of their bands.

However, as a result of websites such as MTV Leak, kids are getting a chance to preview full length albums a week before they are released—giving them a taster of a band's sound. It's a clever technique used. Seeing as all us kids do all day is surf the Internet, MTV has connected with us, using the very same medium we've exercised.

Good or Bad—Who Do You Believe?

[SUMMARY—Is gaming evil or good?]

(WORLD) We all know that playing too many video fries your brain and makes you a walking zombie… or does it?

You have to question the validity of a report which was commissioned by one of the biggest video games manufacturer, but apparently, video games can be used as a teaching tool.

70% of the surveyed teachers felt that playing games could lead to anti-social behaviour while 30% of students believed that playing games could lead to increased violence and aggression.

But according to another study it's all about the time spent: gaming slightly hurt school performance, but only when the students spent more than four hours each day at it over the weekend.

Digital Media Initiative

(US) A new initiative enabling young people to question and analyse the role of digital media in their lives has been launched by US-based Global Kids.

Funded by a $900,000 grant from the MacArthur Foundation, they will be engaging with young people on their own digital turf in Teen Second Life and through existing youth media groups.

It just makes sense, educating young people about media literacy through the mediums they are already using. Looking forward to seeing the results.

(WORLD) The growth of mediasnacking coupled with the rise in digital capital creation, has led to 'permission-based viewing'.

After content-creation, content-sharing is what all MediaSnackers love to do—create a tune, take a pic, launch a blog, find a new trend, make a profile etc, then share, share, share…

However, more and more popular platforms such as MySpace, Flickr, Bebo, Radar, Imbee etc. are providing protection to content and permission-based restrictions for their users.

As the 'digital breadcrumbs' of peoples lives become more and more obvious, this new trend will blossom and flourish as mediasnackers take control of access from the mass to the few—permission-based viewing.

Showing Off Online

(UK/WORLD) Following my previous post and much showing off to friends and teachers at school, I've been flooded with requests to be included in my next post (this is as about as shameless as shameless posts go—Hi to Lauren, Rosanna and Mr. Sathiakumar—I know Sir, I should be doing my coursework! And to everyone else that wanted to be included…)

As a result of this, I decided this would be a perfect topic for my next post. We all know that Mediasnackers is all about the creating and consuming of media from kids, but what about being included and fully submerged in it? I turn, once again, to the ever reliable MySpace. The perfect source for being included on the Web. Creating profiles for everyone to see soon becomes an online popularity contest. I've found that after 2 years of owning an account, teenagers can be a fickle, pretentious bunch of people, competing for the most friends, the best picture comments, the most unsettling photos and the most arrogant autobiographies—whichever will gain them the most attention. It's the place where you spark interest from being outrageous, 'random', and following a trend. The current 'trend' on MySpace is 'scene'. A far cry from 'emo'. "My God, what is she talking about?" is screaming through your head now.
