Junk Food Advertising R.I.P.

burger

[SUMMARY—Ofcom announces blanket ban and more.]

(UK) My friends must be gutted—Ofcom today announced a total ban on junk food advertising on, not just children's programming on all channels, but also on programmes which has over a 20% under 16s viewership.

The monetary impact of the restrictions has been cited to be £39m in ad revenue. Even though there is a short consultation period, the ban will be phased in over 2 years with an aim to simply reduce the amount of junk food ads seen by under-16s.

However, if you dig into Ofcom's reports here and here you will find figures outlining young people are watching less and less television and increasingly consuming media through other digital devices and obviously more and more through the net.

It's simple: no one can argue against restricting the amount of adverts which promote the consumption of high-salt and high-fat foods, although reason and common-sense highlights it cannot be a solitary action devoid of alternative subsidies or income streams which the ban will affect. The move also displays a lack of commitment or understood relevancy regarding indigenous childrens broadcasting—maybe the title should read 'UK childrens media R.I.P.'?

Parents Tech Gap

computer_devil

[SUMMARY—The parental digital divide.]

(UK/WORLD) I've been ridiculously busy with UCAS (university stuff) and school work and very much abandoned Mediasnacker—so, back to business!

As I'm sure we're all aware and reminded of constantly, technology is getting bigger and better. This is all well and good for Generation Y but what about their parents? Are they tech savvy or struggling so much that they have to ask their kids how to switch on a computer? You think it's an exaggeration? My mum is still computer and Internet illiterate, even with four computers in the house! (And I just told her that I had included her in this post, and she replied with, "At least I'm sane, unlike all of you—computers make you go crazy.")

Pod Blog Vod Part 1

sonar

[SUMMARY—Training gig for the BBC.]

(UK) Just got back from delivering training to a host of BBC journalists in their 'Pod, Blog, Vod' day. I took on three 90minute sessions outlining my take on youth media and why they should care plus did a little 'RSS 101 for noobies'.

I also got to see a promo reel of the forthcoming BBC iPlayer. There will be lots of discussion on the web regarding this one in the coming 6 months as it enables people to watch streamed BBC content (including full shows) for a time-limited period.

Thanks to Adrian who invited me and coordinated it all, the 22 participants for not throwing stuff and paying attention in class, and also the other trainers (Adrian, Ian, Robin and Wilf).

Web 3.0

web1to3

[SUMMARY—The next step.]

(WORLD) If you're still trying to get your head around web 2.0 then this is really giong to confuse you—web 3.0 is already being discussed and outlined.

The graphic above is taken from Gary Hayes Personalize Media weblog (reproduced with kind permission). It illustrates, for us visual thinkers, the transition from the one dimensional web ten years ago, through to the two-way internet most are experiencing today and also marks the launch of the web going 3D.

(LEB) Funded primarily by the Dutch government (pledging over $225,000) the Sawtna project enables a group of 45 Lebanese young people to have a voice by creating their own news stories.

Th project is also supported by The Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation (LBC) and UNICEF.

Labaki, the LBC director in charge of the series:

This show is not just made for youth—on the contrary, it is made by youth for adults. It can open a dialogue between kids and their families

[SUMMARY—What 42,000 12-16 year olds think.]

(WORLD) The company which created Habbo has published one of the largest global youth studies, asking 42,000 12-16 year olds about their media habits.

It makes for a fascinating read and here are my 'take-aways':

• 89% state the internet is the most used media mainly for socialising;
• 66% think television in imoportant and less than half, radio
• 85% own a mobile, with nearly all sending SMS, half using it to take pictures and a third to listen to music on;
• 88% state music is important with the most popular global bands being Green Day and Eminem;
• Over a third consider themselves as 'technology freaks' and 16% so they are nerds.

Audiences Yorkshire

audienceyorkshire

[SUMMARY—Last minute stand-in gig.]

(UK) I just returned from Audience Yorkshire Conference 2006, in Leeds, after being asked to stand in for a speaker who couldn't attend. I did a mash-up of the MediaSnackers youth professionals training and delivered two 55 minute sessions on young people and youth media.

The attendees were great and really generous in their response—thank you if you were one of them and hope to be delivering some training for you guys soon :-)

DK was an interesting and engaging speaker who delivered a very practical and useful session on using new technologies to attract a youth audience. DK knows his subject inside out and we have had excellent feedback from the delegates who attended.
