Mobile Digital News

mobiledigitalnews

[SUMMARY—School kids capturing the news with mobile devices.]

(UK) Check out this article which shows how easy it is for MediaSnackers to become creators, producers and participants by simply using the digital media devices they already have.

Thabo, 12, said:

Normally in class, we record information in writing. Today, we wrote scripts and used technology, so it was a good balance.

Exactly what we were doing with the participants of the MediaSnackers training last week in Plymouth.

Mediabox

mediabox

[SUMMARY—New media fund for UK youth.]

(UK) £6 million is being made available for young people in the UK to enable them to have a voice through media projects. The fund is called Mediabox and according to the press release grants will be available for film, radio, television, print, photography and interactive media.

Melissa Gibbons, a young person who has been working on the brand design on Mediabox, said:

I think 'MEDIA BOX' will be a great opportunity for young people looking to get in the Media world. I'm confident that the brand identity for 'Media Box', with the strapline and website, will attract young people and will not be a 1 month wonder, but will stand its time.

Not much on the website at the moment and don't know if it's Mediabox or 'Media Box' but can MediaSnackers play?

Multitasking: Good or Bad?

timecover

[SUMMARY—Is juggling many forms of media at once having a negative impact.]

(US/World) Are young people who media multitask on a path to attention deficit disorder or are they evolving a skill past generations never had?

A big question those brainy folks at the Kaiser Family Foundation took on recently.

Lots of take-aways here including the webcast and presentation of the session.

Creative Partnerships Training Part2

CP

[SUMMARY—A quick review of our training in Plymouth.]

(UK) We just delivered our two day youth professional MediaSnackers Training to Creative Partnerships (South West).

One of the big take-away's from the two days was how important 'play' is in the learning pedagogy. Allowing people the time and space to direct their own learning at their place with that sense of fun instilled is something we'll continue to develop.

Thank you Katy, Julie, Jo, Helen, Jenny, Barry, Jan, TC, Cass, Greg, Mel, Kate, Ed, Jake, Tamsin, Paula and Laura for making the training so much fun.

Wii Reviewed

wii

[SUMMARY—One 17 year old gives us the lowdown on the new gaming must-have.]

(UK) I was expectant of the Wii since summer, which led to me being able to say "I can't wait till December when I can finally have a Wii." In case you aren't aware what I'm talking about, the new Nintendo console, originally named Revolution, is called Wii. It's pronounced 'we', rather than 'wee'. They named it this because they wanted to imply that the console included everyone. And the two iis mean 'good' in Japanese. And you could say cynically that Nintendo are so obsessed with becoming number one that they named their console after it.

Policing Youth Online

johnreid

[SUMMARY—A kite mark to protect kids online.]

(UK) As described in the future trends post (see 'Legislation Not Education'), the UK government has teased us with plans of an approved 'stamp' for software to ensure parents feel safe whilst their child is online.

No other real details, but as more and more media switches online and the youth follow, you can bet your YouTube and MSN Chat account this will be the start of many policies and strategies to 'police youth online' or provide better protection for them—depends on your viewpoint.

Home Secretary John Reid said:

We are setting up a task group with the industry to protect kids from what has become one of the greatest threats of abuse, which is the World Wide Web, the internet.

UPDATE: Putting two and two together here I'm thinking these boys will show up on the radar soon and could be linked with the announcement…

MediaSnack-snack-snackers#6

snacked

[SUMMARY—Quotes which illustrate.]

(WORLD) MediaSnackers are being served more and more ways to snack on their chosen media than ever. It's hard to differentiate between companies and start-ups enabling snacking or the snacking trends driving media platform development, but here are a couple of quotes from the 'experts' to sum it all up for any 'MediaSnacker-virgins':

The fears are so painfully overblown, is there porn on MySpace? Of course. And bullying, sexual teasing and harassment are rampant among teenagers. It is how you learn to make meaning, cultural roles, norms. These kids need to explore their life among strangers. Teach them how to negotiate this new world. They need these public spaces now that other public spaces are closed to them. They need a place that is theirs. We should not always be chasing them and stopping them from growing up.
Danah Boyd quoted from this article.

We are committed to keeping sex offenders off MySpace. Sentinel Safe will allow us to aggregate all publicly available sex offender databases into a real-time searchable form, making it easy to cross-reference and remove known registered sex offenders from the MySpace community. The creation of this first-of-its-kind real-time searchable database technology is a significant step to keep our members as safe as possible.
Chief Security Officer, Hemanshu Nigam, talking about plans to make MySpace safer.

Children are doing this quite innocently. We don't need to criminalise them.
Robin Hart of Intuitive Media whose survey found almost a third 1,500 eight to 13-year-olds shared music via their mobiles.

Lil' Bush

lilbush

[SUMMARY—From mobile to TV.]

(US) Here's another first: a cartoon series created for consumption on mobile phones has migrated to the bigger-small screen, TV.

Lil' Bush is an hilarious cartoon about the US President portrayed as a little kid, with other members of his government also 'shrunk-down' to his size. Fantastically scipted and performed which is what you expect from the producers of The Simpsons and Late Night with David Letterman.

An excpetion to prove the rule or a first of many… ?

Illegal Music Downloads

cd

[SUMMARY—The rise and rise of illegal music downloading.]

(WORLD) Downloading music illegally from the Internet is probably the biggest single pet hate of the music industry in the past few years. More peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing networks such as Limewire, and torrent sites (which enables the user to download whole albums) are popping up around the web, challenging legal file-sharing programs such as the iTunes music store and Napster's pay service.
